The Bob Johnson Excellence in Journalism Award honors Robert “Bob” Johnson, a founder of FOG and the organization’s first executive director, who served for 16 years until his death in 2007. Bob spent his career as a journalist with the Associated Press, and he devoted his “retirement” to fighting for government transparency in New Mexico.
The investigative journalism adage “follow the money” was as true in Bob’s time as it is today. Examining the link between money and power takes persistence, attention to detail, and often extensive public records requests. But the reporting that emerges from that work underscores the vital role of journalism — because without it, the public would never know how government power is influenced or how public money is used.

What counts as a story that examines the link between money and power? For the purposes of this award, “power” refers to those in charge — elected officials, appointed leaders, government employees, and public agencies — and the influence they wield. When deciding whether your story fits the submission theme, consider whether money affected how that influence was used. Examples may include reporting on elections, campaigns, public offices, lawmaking, regulation, or the actions and decisions of those involved in governing. If you are still unsure, we suggest submitting it so we can take a look

All work must have been published or aired between January 1 and December 31 of 2025
Entries must focus on local, county, or state government or officials in New Mexico
Entries may be print, broadcast or online
Entrants may be individuals, reporting teams, or group entries

JUDGING
Entries will be reviewed and judged by the executive boards of the New Mexico Foundation for Open Government, the New Mexico Press Association, and the New Mexico Broadcasters Association.
JUDGING CRITERIA
Does the entry adequately inform the public on the covered topic
Is the source material, such as documentation and data, verifiable
Are quotes used in an effective manner that further the topic and gives a voice to affected individuals
How was the topic presented to the public by the publication or broadcast
Were there obstacles to obtaining information and, if so, how were these overcome
Did the reporting result in reforms

The Bob Johnson Excellence in Journalism Award includes a $5,000 cash prize awarded in recognition of completed journalistic work. The prize does not constitute payment for coverage and does not influence editorial decisions, reporting priorities, or conclusions. Award decisions are made independently based on journalistic merit. Award recipients are responsible for any applicable taxes associated with the prize.
The views and conclusions expressed in the submitted work are those of the journalists and do not necessarily reflect the views of the award sponsors. Sponsorship of the award does not constitute endorsement of any reporting, findings, or conclusions.
Employees, officers, and board members of the sponsoring organizations, as well as members of the judging panel and their immediate family members, are not eligible for the award.
Entrants retain all rights to their submitted work. Submission of work for consideration does not grant the sponsors any ownership or publication rights. Prior to purchasing the News-Sun in January 2022, he was named by the previous owners as the publisher in 2013. Mary Lynn Roper retired as president & general manager of KOAT-TV, the Hearst Television ABC affiliate serving the New Mexico, television market. She spent 48 years in broadcasting, first in radio at station KRTN in her hometown of Raton, New Mexico. In 2005 Roper was inducted into the New Mexico Broadcasters Hall of Fame; in 2008 she was named New Mexico Broadcaster of the Year; and in 2013 she received an American Advertising Federation of New Mexico Silver Medal.
Charles “Kip” Purcell is a director of the Rodey Law Firm, a past president of FOG, and a 2014 Dixon Award winner. He was law clerk to the Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg, U. S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, 1984-1985. He was also a member of the Harvard Law Review from 1982 to 1984 and was Executive Editor of that journal from 1983 to 1984. He graduated from the University of Virginia and Harvard Law School.

Before joining the Office of the New Mexico Attorney General, where he supervised the work of 30 lawyers in four civil law divisions, he practiced law at Rodey, Dickason, Sloan, Akin & Robb, P.A.
